4 Steps to Digesting the Word of God


I am convinced of, and have personally reaped the benefits of approaching the Word of God as my daily bread.

1. Even before I read it, I lift it up above my head so as to acknowledge its place in my life, above and before ALL things.

2. Then through simple and slow, very slow reading of His Word, I begin to masticate a bite-sized morsel of what is written and break it down repetitively. Masticating is a vital part of digestion as well as of the enjoyment of eating. The more we chew the easier the digestion. The psalmist encourages us to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). It is through this chewing, this savoring, that we can see the love and goodness of God so clearly penned before us.

3. I now swallow the Bread, His Word. To me, this is a clear way of saying, “I humbly and gratefully receive it as Truth in my life and, by Your grace, I will follow it and allow it to have its way in me.”

4. Finally, it is now “in my system” and I can do nothing about it except reap the benefits of its power, its nourishment and life-giving ability to provide me with all I need and to help me eliminate that which is toxic in my heart and soul.

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him” (Psalm 34:8).

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God'” (Matthew 4:4).

“Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).

Our Heavenly Father is a God of relationship, One who longs to communicate and commune with us. More than us wanting to be with Him, He wants to be with us. I see this over and over in Scripture and am humbled and grateful. Since we have such an honored presence at the table, let us not rush the process.
